Are We Saving The Date or What?
We get a LOT of questions about Save The Dates. The first question is usually "are they really necessary" followed by "how early do I have to send them" - and the answer to both is... well, it depends. (Full disclosure: You're going to see that as the answer to a LOT of things around here when it comes to your wedding invitations! We can do things as traditionally - or non-traditionally - as you'd like!)
And so without further ado... the answers to some of your most common Save The Date questions.
What Is A Save The Date?
A Save The Date is exactly what it sounds like - an announcement of your official wedding date (or event date, if you're planning something other than a wedding!) to let your guests know to lock in that date. Save The Dates are not invitations - although everyone who gets a Save The Date should absolutely receive an invitation.
What Information Do I Include On A Save The Date?
Save The Dates always include the date (duh!) of the event as well as the general location. Since they aren't invitations you don't need to include all of the finer details, such as the time and specific locations - just the general city and state will do. These days it's also customary to include the wedding or event website so that your guests can find details about where they can book a hotel if they're coming in from out of town.
How Early Do I Need To Send My Save The Dates?
This is where things get a little tricky. Basically, you want to send your Save The Dates with enough time to get on your guests' social calendars and so they can make any travel arrangements easily. If most of your guests are local then sending your invitations 4-6 months in advance is probably more than enough time. However, if you have a lot of guests coming in from out of town you may want to send them at least 8 months in advance, if not more, so that they have time to book flights and hotels at favorable rates. (Note: It's also helpful if you have a few hotel room blocks set up for your guests in varying price points, so that no one is scrambling to find somewhere to stay!)
